Deacon Charles Jordan

Charlie’s Journey

1931 - 2010

Charles Herman Jordan, Sr. (Charlie) was born to Albert and Hattie Jordan on September 7, 1931 in Roanoke, Virginia. At the age of six, his mother moved him and his brothers Jesse and Nathanial and sister Adell to Columbus, Ohio following his oldest sister, Mary “Tiss”. In Columbus, Charlie attended Columbus Public Schools. He was a graduate of Central High School where he played varsity basketball. Upon graduation, Charlie enlisted in the US army where he served in Korea during the Korean War.

After Korea, he became an entrepreneur and opened Chi-Chi’s Bar and Grill. During this time he met and fell in love with the “fine” Bertha Surratt Shaw. Their 57 years of marriage began January 21, 1953. Charlie became a father to Delores, Kenny, Robert, Resteree, and Debbie and later from this union his baby daughter Deniece and youngest son, Charles Jr. “Chuckie” were added. He began working for the great State of Ohio for the penal system. During his 30 year tenure with the state he worked his way up from a prison guard to a captain and finally Assistant Warden at the time of his retirement in July 1992.

In 1960 Charlie Jordan gave his life to the Lord. He became a member of Church of Christ of Apostolic Faith. He later joined Apostolic Faith Temple when he went to help his brother. There he worked as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and superintendent.

In 1994, the Jordans moved to Olympia Fields, IL. They attended Morgan Park until they decided to move their membership. In February 2002 Charlie and his wife Bertha became members of Victory Apostolic Church. There he lovingly and faithfully served as a deacon until Jesus took him home.

On November 4, 2010, at age 79, Charles “Charlie” Jordan transitioned to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Hattie Jordan, brother, Jesse (Margaret) and his sisters Adell and Mary. He leaves behind as his legacy: his loving wife, Bertha; brother, Nathanial (Marta); children: Delores Warfield (Charles); Kenneth Shaw (Annette); Robert Shaw (Patricia); Resteree Shaw; Deborah Sessley (Edward); Deniece Jordan-Walker (Wesley) and Charles Jr. (Karen); 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, who he greatly loved, and special beloved friends too numerous to list (you know who you are).
