Esel Baskin

Esel Baskin

September 19, 1943 - August 24, 2008

Esel Baskin was born on September 19, 1943 in Buena Vista, Mississippi to Queen Esther Pulliam and Earnest Baskin Sr.  His brother, Earnest Baskin, Jr., preceded him in death.

As a child, Esel accepted Christ and was baptized at the Obedient Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois.  He attended Manley Elementary School and graduated from Marshall High School.

On January 20, 1963, Esel was united in holy matrimony to Mary Alice Cameron, who preceded him in death.  To this union, two beautiful daughters were born, Michelle and Leah.

Esel was employed as a Fireman at the Norfolk & Southern Railroad (formerly the Penn Central Railroad).  After extensive study and perseverance, Esel was promoted to Locomotive Engineer where he was the "driving force" on many trains for over 37 years.  He retired from that position in 2003.

Esel not only had a hearty and uplifting laugh, but a humorous spirit that brought joy and delight to all around him.  His immediate and extended family could always rely on Esel's generosity, kindness and presence.

On August 24, 2008, Esel Baskin departed this life.  He leaves to lovingly cherish his memory, two daughters; Michelle Tharpe (Chicago, IL), and Leah Baskin (Jackson, MO), two sisters, Della Berry (Naperville, IL), and Mary Lusk (Chicago, IL); seven grandchildren, Van, Ronald, Robert, William, Shaun, Jacqueline and Jason; a special friend, Iris Daniels; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
